Information
Khalil Raad was a Palestinian photographer from the city of Jerusalem. He was born in the town of Bhamdoun in Lebanon and studied the art of photography in Basel, Switzerland. He is considered the first professional photographer in Palestine. Raad began his career by establishing a studio on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem in 1891.
As an official Ottoman photographer, his first major documentary project was to record events of the First World War. Through his photographs, he documented social life in Palestinian cities and villages, as well as political events and figures of that era. His close relationship with the Ottoman military governor Jamal Pasha allowed him to travel freely between Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine.
