Information

A new scientific study was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology by a Palestinian research team led by Dr. Musa Hindiyeh from Caritas Children’s Hospital.

The study evaluated the recommendations of the American standards for testing the resistance of Shigella intestinal bacteria, which causes diarrhea, to antibiotics. Specifically, the research focused on Shigella resistance to the antibiotic azithromycin as well as the mechanism of genetic resistance to the antibiotic in Palestine.

The importance of this study is based on the agreement of the international reviewers with the Palestinian authors’ proposal to amend the international standards for measuring Shigella resistance to azithromycin. Modifying these standards leads to a higher response rate for patients with antibiotics based on the medical point of view, according to what was proposed by Dr. Ali Sabateen from Augusta Victoria Hospital (Informant).

The Medical Director at Caritas Children's Hospital, Dr. Hiam Marzouqa Awad, confirmed that the success of this research is due to the work of a team that included a number of Palestinian institutions. Specifically: Dr. Hindiyah, the research leader, and the principal investigator, Ms. Mona Salah from Bethlehem University/Palestine Polytechnic University, Ms. Randa Al-Qass, and Mr. Raed Ghoneim from the Caritas Children’s Hospital laboratory team, who built the Shigella database over the study period of 10 years, in addition to Sabateen, who contributed In analyzing data from a medical perspective. Marzouqa Awad praised the role of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, represented by the central laboratory team and Professor Issa Shtayyeh, who helped determine the genetic fingerprint of bacteria.
