Information
Dr. Imad Al-Khatib is the Executive Vice President for the University Campus at the University of Jerusalem. He is a Professor of Fluid Dynamics and Energy, holding a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Technology Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 1998. He also earned an M.Phil. in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering from Cardiff University in 1990 and a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Power Engineering from Helwan University in Cairo in 1985.
Dr. Al-Khatib began his academic career in 1986 as a faculty member at the Palestine Polytechnic University. He established and managed the Renewable Energy and Environment Research Unit at the university from 1999 to 2011. During this period, he also served as the founding Director of the Research Affairs Department from 2002 to 2005 and later as the Dean of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies from 2007 to 2009.
In 2011, Dr. Al-Khatib became a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Birzeit University, where he remained until 2014. In the same year, he was appointed as the President of the Palestine Polytechnic University and served in that capacity until July 2021.
Since September 2021, Dr. Al-Khatib has been working as the Executive Vice President for the University Campus at the University of Jerusalem.
Dr. Al-Khatib's academic and research work has focused on climate change modeling, particularly the impact of climate change on water resources in the Jordan River basin. He played a significant role in preparing the National Climate Change Report on Mitigation and Adaptation in 2015 and served as an expert in the Clima-South program, an EU-funded initiative focused on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.
Additionally, he authored the first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP-1) in collaboration between the European Union and the League of Arab States in 2015. Dr. Al-Khatib also worked as a technical advisor with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on the development of work plans for the ESCWA Technology Center in Jordan.
He co-founded the Observatory for Science, Technology, and National Innovation at the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology in 2011. Furthermore, Dr. Al-Khatib has served as a scientific reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report and contributed to the preparation of the Sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO6) for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Dr. Al-Khatib has been involved in launching numerous programs and projects funded and implemented in cooperation with EU Framework Programs 5, 6, and 7, Horizon 2020, as well as national initiatives funded by USAID, US-CEP, AFD, HPF, BMBF, WB-QIF, ESCWA, UNDP, and UNIDO.
He also served as an advisor to the founder and President of the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology, assuming the role of Secretary-General of the Academy from early 2001. Dr. Al-Khatib's efforts led to the inclusion of Palestine in several prestigious international scientific associations, including the InterAcademy Partnership, the InterAcademy Medical Panel, the Union of the Mediterranean Academies, the Network of Academies of Sciences in Islamic Countries, and the Human Rights Network of Academies and Societies of Sciences in the OIC Member States. He has also played an instrumental role in important national initiatives, such as the International Water Conference: Values and Rights (2005, 2009) in collaboration with the Palestinian Water Authority and the United Nations Development Programme, the establishment of the Environmental Field Center in Jericho in 2003, and the German-Palestinian Science Bridge (2017-2025), among many others.
