Hashem Al-Sarraj (born in 1966 in Libya), an American physician and medical researcher of Palestinian origin, is best known for his research in liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatitis C, and has more than 20 research publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Al-Sarraj was born in 1966 in Libya to Palestinian parents from the Gaza Strip. He graduated in medicine from the Arab Medical University in Benghazi, Libya in 1991, then moved to the United States, where he worked in the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine Hospital (1993-1995), and obtained a gastroenterology fellowship in clinical gastroenterology in University of New Mexico (1995-1997), and a master's degree in public health from the same university in 1998. From 2007 to 2016 he worked as director of the Texas Medical Center for Gastroenterology, in Houston, and from 2012 to 2017 he served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Diseases Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatolog, and today holds the chair in the Department of Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

His research on the rising incidence of liver cancer in the United States, published in 1999, has received over 2,000 citations, and he has authored more than 300 scientific papers on the subject. Dr. El-Sarraj has also become a leading expert in chronic liver disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. His research also focuses on the clinical epidemiology and outcomes of several gastrointestinal disorders, including Barrett's esophagus, esophageal adenocarcinoma, and hepatitis C. He has received more than 60 funded research grants, including grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Institute for Cancer Prevention and Research.
