Information
The deceased was born in the city of Nablus in (1950) and studied in the city's schools and graduated from An-Najah National College. He then joined Egyptian universities and studied in Cairo and graduated in (1973) with a degree in Business Administration. After graduating, he worked in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and then in Jordan until he decided to return to his homeland in (1986).
The deceased worked for a period of time in the vegetable oil company, in addition to his involvement in social and charitable work in the city of Nablus, where he was elected as a member of the administrative body of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, in addition to his membership in several social and charitable associations in the city. As a result of his political and national activities, he was administratively detained for six months by the Israeli occupation forces in (1990) and was transferred to the Negev, Junaid and Far’a prisons.
The deceased served as the general manager of Al-Hadaf Company, an investment brokerage firm, and was a member of the Palestinian National Council. He was married and had two sons and a daughter. In 1990, he became a member of the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National University, and in 1995, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Board. On June 7, 2000, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees by the late President Yasser Arafat.
The deceased was known for his devotion to the city of Nablus and its jewel, An-Najah University. The period during which the university had him as Chairman of its Board of Trustees was one of the best periods, as it witnessed a comprehensive renaissance represented by the expansion of the university to the new campus, which was built on the land of Al-Junaid, which was purchased by his late father, Hikmat Al-Masri (the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the university).
He has virtuous deeds and great social and humanitarian contributions, and this is not surprising, as he comes from a distinguished family from the families of Nablus that were loyal to Nablus and loved Nablus.
He died on 2/2/2009 after suffering from a terminal illness, which did not give him more than three months after he contracted it.
The late Salah Hikmat al-Masri's widow, Asma al-Masri, is a prominent figure in Nablus. She inherited her husband's love for the city, and in his honor, she established the Salah Hikmat al-Masri Award for Artistic Creativity, sponsored by his wife. The award is presented annually to outstanding students at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the university.
