Reem Kassis is a Palestinian writer and cookbook author. Her work focuses on the intersection of food with culture, history, and politics.
Childhood and family
Reem Kassis was born and raised in Jerusalem to a father from a Christian family in the Galilee and a mother from a Muslim family in the Triangle area.
She left Jerusalem at the age of 17 to enroll at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she obtained her undergraduate degree in business administration and international studies in the Huntsman program, then obtained an MBA from Wharton School in 2010, and studied more at the London School of Economics and obtained a master's degree in science Social self.
Occupation
Prior to her writing career, Kassis worked as a business consultant at McKinsey. She has also worked with the World Economic Forum and in Executive Research. After her daughters were born, she decided to quit her job and pursue a career in writing.
Her first book, The Palestinian Table, was nominated for the James Beard Award and won the Food Writers Guild Award for First Book, and was shortlisted for the André Simon Prize and the Edward Stanford Prize. It was also selected as one of the best NPRs books of 2017.
She has also written as a chaplain on issues of culinary personalization, food history, and culture. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Serious Eats, and other specialist publications.
Achievements and Awards
The Palestinian Table was shortlisted for the André Simon Awards for Food and Drink Books, the Edward Stanford Awards for Writing and Travel, and was the winner of the Eugenie Brazier Awards in Lyon. The book also won the first book award by the Food Writers Guild. Nominated for the James Beard Foundation Award in the International category.
