He was born in the village of Deir Istiya, southwest of Nablus, in 1928. He studied in the village, at the Friends School in Ramallah, and at the Rashidiya College in Jerusalem. He volunteered for the Iraqi Arab Army with the rank of lieutenant and was stationed in the village of Anin, near Jenin, where he was wounded in the leg during clashes with Israeli forces. He worked as an English teacher at the Fadiliya School in Tulkarm. In 1950, he went to Saudi Arabia and was appointed in Dhahran as an Arabic teacher for foreign students.
He returned to teach at the Sa'diyya School in Qalqilya and the Fadiliya School in Tulkarm. In 1957, he worked as a teacher in Safita (Jabal al-Alawiyin), Syria. Two years later, he worked as a translator and proofreader for Dar al-Ilm lil-Malayin (House of Knowledge for Millions) in Beirut. He oversaw the "Successful Ones" series. He served as secretary of the "Al-Ulum" (Science) magazine in 1964-1965 and worked as an editor in the English section of the Beirut-based "Al-Risala" magazine. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Beirut Arab University and a diploma in education in 1968 from the same university.
He then enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the Lebanese University and began preparing a doctoral dissertation entitled "The Ayyubids in Yemen." He authored 23 books in the fields of literature, politics, and history.
