Born in Birzeit in 1947; studied at Bezallel Art Academy in Jerusalem from 1967-70; has exhibited his works since 1975 in Palestine, Israel, and around the world; served as head of the League of Palestinian Artists for four years; cartoonist and art instructor at Al-Quds University; author of two books on Palestinian folklore; his paintings revolve around the Palestinian struggle, peasant life and archetypal people in traditional dresses; member of the ‘New Vision’ artist group which formed during the first Intifada; co-founder and later Director of the Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem from 1995; participated in the French-Palestinian spring exhibit at the Paris Institut du Monde Arabe in 1997; won the Nile Award at the 1998 Cairo Biennial and the Palestine Prize for the Visual Arts in 1998, among others; most famously known for his work “Camels of hardship” (1973); established and designed, together with Nabil Anani, the Museum of Palestinian Folklore at Inash Al-Usrah, Ramallah, during 1999-2002.
