Issa Balata: A Canadian writer and critic of Palestinian origin from Jerusalem, he received his doctorate in Arabic literature in 1969 from the University of London. He was appointed professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the Hartford Institute in Connecticut, USA, between 1968 and 1975. He then moved to McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he taught Arabic literature and language at the university's Institute of Islamic Studies. He served as editor-in-chief of the journal "Al-Arabiyya" starting in 1978 and became a member of the editorial board of "Al-Alam Al-Arabi" at Cambridge University Press in 1981.
