Information

Shihab al-Qawasmi is a Palestinian Jerusalemite visual artist born in 1959 in the Old City of Jerusalem ,  specifically in the Bab al-Silsila neighborhood overlooking the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque . He is considered one of the most prominent Palestinian artists who have dedicated their work to documenting the city of Jerusalem and its cultural and religious landmarks.

His life

His artistic talent began at an early age, when he discovered his passion for drawing after the 1967 setback . He studied at the "Beit Al-Fanan" Institute in Jerusalem, then obtained a diploma in art education. In 1977, he traveled to Europe to study fine arts, returning to begin his professional career in 1978.

His works

Al-Qawasmi's works focus on documenting the landmarks of Old Jerusalem, including the city gates, its markets, its neighborhoods, and the landmarks of Al-Aqsa Mosque. He uses various techniques in his paintings, such as pencils and acrylics , giving them a realistic and aesthetic character at the same time.
Among his most notable published works are his book “Once Upon a Time, Jerusalem a Hundred Years Ago” (2016), which includes 70 paintings depicting Jerusalem in the late Ottoman era, and “Lanterns of Al-Aqsa” (2022), which contains 124 drawings of landmarks of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In addition to his artistic work, Al-Qawasmi is a cultural activist, having participated in numerous local and international exhibitions, and has contributed to spreading Palestinian culture and protecting Jerusalem's heritage through his artwork.
In 2025, Al-Qawasmi presented his paintings of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque to sports star Mohamed Abu Trika , during a visit by the Jerusalemite capital club’s delegation to Doha .
Through his works, Shihab Al-Qawasmi contributes to conveying the history and culture of Jerusalem to current and future generations, emphasizing the importance of art as a means of preserving Palestinian identity.
