Information

Laila Rashad al-Shawa (1940–2022) was a Palestinian artist born in Gaza City . Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public spaces (such as the British Museum ) and private collections. Much of her work uses photographs as a basis for screen printing .  She is the daughter of Rashad al-Shawa , the mayor of Gaza. Laila al-Shawa died on October 24, 2022, in London.
Shawa began drawing at the age of six  , and when she entered university, she decided to study political science. Her father's friend discouraged her from this and advised her to study art. She studied at the Leonardo da Vinci Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Cairo and then received a scholarship to study in Italy . She studied for six years at the School of Fine Arts in Rome . She later worked as an art education inspector in schools.
Shawa left for London in 1987 and settled there until the end of her life.
She held her first exhibition in Beirut in 1970 , followed by an exhibition in Kuwait in 1972 .
One of her oil paintings, “Hands of Fatima,” is on display at the British Museum .
