Information

Subhiya Qais (1972-) is a Palestinian visual artist , born in the village of Nahf in the Galilee . She studied and graduated from Ibn Sina High School in 1990, received a diploma in artistic guidance from the Galilee Center College in Sakhnin in 2004, and graduated from Oranim College with a BA in Arts in 2012, receiving a first class degree and a teaching certificate with distinction, and completed her second year of studying for a second degree in the “Artist-Teacher” track at Oranim College in 2021. 

Artistic life

Subhiya has been working as an art teacher for gifted students at the Talented School in Tamra since 2009, and worked as an art teacher at the Ministry of Education in 2011. She is a member of the Creativity Association and the Arab Visual Artists Association, and received the Best Expressive Painting Award in the drawing competition on the 50th anniversary of the Kafr Qasim massacre in 2006, an Excellence Award in the Human and Environment Competition from the Visual Arts Department of the Ministry of Education in 2012, a scholarship and certificate of excellence from the President of Oranim College, Professor Yair Karo, and a Bank Leumi scholarship for outstanding students at Oranim College. 

Artistic style

Sobhia specializes in drawing with colors and pencils . Her works are interested in time and place, and she created her own visual vocabulary to blend the struggle of identity, land, history, and her personal struggle with society, and to reflect the concepts of patience, endurance, challenge, and steadfastness in a realistic, expressive, and critical style in a modern context. The cactus plant appeared prominently in her works drawn with oil, acrylic, watercolors, and others. 

Exhibitions and Artistic Participations

Sobhia has held several solo exhibitions, including the Untitled Exhibition in the Galilee in 2006, the Dream Exhibition at the Faculty of Arts in 2010,  and the Hanin Exhibition in Kafr Yasif in 2014.

She has participated in several group exhibitions, including 3 exhibitions in 2005, namely the Dialogue and Female Artists in Creativity Exhibition in Tira , the Together Exhibition in Haifa, the Colors of Nazareth Creativity Exhibition , and the Massacre Memorial Exhibition in Kafr Qasim in 2006. Three exhibitions in 2007, namely the Hand in Hand Exhibition in Haifa, the Place and New Exhibition in Kafr Yasif, the Communication Exhibition in Buqa’ata , and the Shababik Workshop Exhibition in Gaza.

Two exhibitions in 2008, namely the “Land, Memory, Identity” Exhibition in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Nakba in Umm al-Fahm , the Desert Spirit Exhibition in Asfaba , the Gaza Memory That Will Not Disappear Exhibition in 2009, the Bread and Roses Exhibition in Tel Aviv in 2011, and the Scene from My Country Exhibition in Kafr Yasif in 2012, the March Poetry and Women Exhibition at the Mahmoud Darwish Cultural Center in Nazareth in 2013, the Bridge Exhibition at the Al-Hayat Cultural Center in Jerusalem in 2016, the Windows from My Country Exhibition at the Creativity Exhibition in Kafr Yasif in 2017, a traveling exhibition from the Galilee to Jerusalem at the French Cultural Center Network in 2019  , the Earth Breathes Exhibition in the Galilee in 2020, and an art exhibition in London to embody the suffering of the Palestinian people in February 2024. 

She participated in the cultural evening of the Haifa Cultural Club with her paintings with her daughter, the visual artist Asala Hassan from the Galilean village of Nahf.
