Information

Abdul Karim Al-Sayed (1945-2015) is a Palestinian visual artist , born in the town of Al-Majdal . His family was displaced as a result of the Nakba in 1948. He completed his secondary education at Al-Shuwaikh Secondary School in Kuwait in 1961, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in medicine from the University of Baghdad in 1973. He continued his postgraduate studies in radiology in Austria in 1982.

Abdul Karim is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Arts Society , a member of the International Association of Fine Artists ( UNESCO ), the General Union of Arab Fine Artists, and the General Union of Palestinian Fine Artists. He is also a member of the Intellectual Committee and the International Symposium of the Sharjah International Art Biennale in its first five sessions, in addition to being a member of the Advisory Committee for the field of Arab Fine Arts in Qatar .

He wrote many articles in newspapers and magazines such as Al-Ittihad, Al-Bayan, and Al-Khaleej. He was honored on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Emirates Fine Arts Society in 2006. His publications include: Pioneers of Fine Arts in the United Arab Emirates (2013), The Artist Within the Painting (1997), and Mirrors and Shadows (1995).

His artistic style

The human figure has been a major element in Mr. Sayed's works since the 1980s. He then moved to the stage of color reduction, where he focused on the line as a major element, and the square emerged as a semantic, intellectual, and compositional symbol. In most of his works, he depicted his house in Majdal and the jujube tree that stood tall at its entrance. The works of this stage were characterized by a Sufi outlook, inspired by the objective and political circumstances that the region and the Arab world were going through. The deep relationship between place and man and their interconnection also appeared in these works.

He began drawing Palestinian cities in 2006, where he depicted an imaginary city . He then completed a group of works that combined different stages, and presented the subject of the Palestinian person’s alienation inside the country, from siege and steadfastness. He began producing abstract works in 2008 as part of the “Dream City” project and Palestinian cities, in which he presented demolition , bulldozing and displacement . As for his embroidery project , he began it in 2012 and continued until 2014, and implemented it using printing and oil colors.
