Information
Jawad Al-Malhi (1969-) is a Palestinian visual artist born in the Shuafat camp in the city of Jerusalem . He participated in many art exhibitions and won the Accented Residency Award in Cairo in 2011.
His education
Jawad gained a great deal of knowledge of artistic form and structure through his artistic experiences drawing on the walls of the camp in his youth , and on the aid bags that the United Nations distributed in the camp. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Winchester College of Art in the United Kingdom , and then applied to join the Master’s degree course at the same university in 2007.
currency
Al-Malihi has worked on several educational projects in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Europe, involving children, youth and teachers. He was an artist-in-residence at the Delfina Foundation with a solo show of new works in 2010, and an artist-in-residence at the Mamaus Foundation in Lisbon . In 2000, he founded Open Studios, a project for ongoing arts education in the Shuafat refugee camp, a reflection of his core philosophy on the role of art and the artist. Jawad has received numerous grants from the Prince Claus Foundation and other international organizations.
His artistic style
Throughout his artistic career, Jawad focused on exploring communities and their relationship to their environments , local knowledge and daily life practices through drawing , video , installation and photography . He also began to experiment with sculpture and installation art and became fascinated by the technical and visual connections between two and three dimensions . Given his many interests and the local move away from abstraction , he concluded that a number of dilemmas could be solved through photography, a medium he had previously used as a tool for research and development. He succeeded in reinforcing this shift by presenting photographs in an exhibition held as part of his academic career, although his specialization was in drawing, not photography.
