Information

Hassan Saeed Ali Mansour Al-Karmi (nicknamed Abu Ziad ) ( 1905 – May 5 , 2007 ),  a Palestinian linguist , writer and media figure , born in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm . He is the author of a number of linguistic and literary works, and one of the most famous BBC Radio broadcasters ,  and host of the program “ Qawl ‘ala Qawl .” 

His personal life

Hassan Saeed Ali Mansour Al-Karmi was born in  Palestinian city of Tulkarm at the end of June /beginning of July 1905. [ 

His father is the scholar and minister Saeed Al-Karmi , and his brothers are: the poet Abdul Karim Al-Karmi (Abu Salma) , the politician Abdul Ghani Al-Karmi , the writer Ahmed Shaker Al-Karmi , and the writer Mahmoud Al-Karmi . His grandfather is Sheikh Ali bin Mansour Al-Karmi . 

Hassan Al-Karmi married a Syrian woman named Amina, and had a son, Ziad Al-Karmi, and two daughters: Suhaam Al-Karmi and Ghada Karmi .

His study

He received his primary and secondary education in the schools of his city, Tulkarm . He also received his secondary education in Maktab Anbar in Damascus , then joined the English College in Jerusalem in 1925 AD .

His career

His work is teaching.
Hassan Al-Karmi worked as an English and mathematics teacher in a number of schools, then in 1934 he worked as a teacher at the Arab College in Jerusalem. After that, he joined the University of London , where he specialized in the principles of education and educational statistics during the period 1937-1938 . After his return to Palestine , he moved to the Palestinian Education Department with the rank of Assistant Inspector.

His work at BBC Radio

After the end of the British Mandate over Palestine in 1948 , Al-Karmi joined the Arabic section of BBC Radio in London , where he worked as a language monitor and prepared a series of lessons to teach English on the radio.

He also prepared and presented his program “Qawl ‘ala Qawl”  , which he continued to present for 33 consecutive years. The material of this program was published in more than thirteen volumes. The idea of the program was based on poetic culture, as Al-Karmi would review the verses of poetry, their authors, the occasions on which they were said, and other things. The program enjoyed a large following around the world, and questions came to Al-Karmi from Arab and non-Arab countries. 

His relations with Arab leaders

Al-Karmi established strong friendships with Arab leaders, including Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser , Saudi King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud , UAE President Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba , Libyan King  al-Senussi , Iraqi President Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr , and Moroccan King Mohammed V.  ]

During Al-Karmi’s visit to Libya , he met King Al-Senussi , and asked him to answer a verse of poetry. Sheikh Zayed also disagreed with his minister about a verse of poetry, so he wrote to Hassan Al-Karmi to separate them. 

Al-Karmi visited Sudan and met with President Ismail Al-Azhari . He also visited Ghana and met with President Kwame Nkrumah . 

Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser used to listen to the program and was constantly surprised by the fact that the program was broadcast on a foreign radio station instead of an Arab radio station. Abdel Nasser then assigned the Egyptian Minister of Culture to work on trying to broadcast the program from Egypt , but that did not happen.

His linguistic and literary works
“Al-Manar Dictionary” ( English / Arabic ), three editions of which were published: the first in 1971 AD  , the second in 1977 AD, and the third in 1987 AD.
The “Al-Mughni Dictionaries” series is bilingual ( English / Arabic ) and ( Arabic / English ), and they are: “Al-Mughni Al-Akbar”,  “Al-Wasit”, and “Al-Wajeez”.
An Arabic dictionary called “Al-Hadi ila Lughat Al-Arab” was published in four volumes in 1991 and 1992 by Dar Lebanon Publishing House in Beirut.

In addition to translating many books into English, including “The Misers” by Al-Jahiz, he has articles and writings on education, reforming the Arabic dictionary in both English and Arabic , and others.

Honor

In 1983 , he was granted the title of Honorary Member of the Jordanian Academy of Arabic Language . 
In 2006 , he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Arab Translators Association. 

His death

Hassan Al-Karmi died on Saturday evening, May 5, 2007, in the capital, Amman

Achievements and Awards

Medals

In 1969 , [  Elizabeth II of Britain awarded him the highest British honour, the Order of the British Empire (MBE), in recognition of his contributions to the BBC . The ceremony of awarding and presenting him with the honour took place at Buckingham Palace in London . 
In 1990 , PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat awarded him the Jerusalem Medal for Culture, Literature and Arts .
