Information

The writer Basma Mortada Halawa was born in Nablus and studied in its schools. She joined the University of Jordan and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and sociology. During her university studies, she joined the resistance. She returned home to find that the occupation had closed the doors to her work in the field of education, so she worked in the Nablus Municipal Public Library, and continued to publish articles in local newspapers and write stories for children.

Her ambition pushed her to travel to the Soviet Union (formerly) in pursuit of education, but her body, which suffers from heart problems, could not bear the extreme cold, so she went to Egypt to work as a program preparer for “Voice of Palestine” in Cairo. She resided in Egypt and married the progressive Egyptian Arab poet Zain al-Din Fouad, who became angry with her. She fell ill, so the doctors decided to perform a second heart surgery. She died before surgery while in hospital on the anniversary of Earth Day in 1979. She recommended that she be buried in her hometown, and that the coffin be paraded through the streets of Nablus.
