Information
The poet and orator Muhammad Isaf Othman al-Nashashibi was born in Jerusalem in 1882. He is a descendant of an ancient family whose first grandfather was one of King al-Zahir’s men, “Jaqmaq.”
Muhammad Isaf joined the Quds Katib, then moved to Beirut to study at “Dar Al-Hikma”, where he stayed for four years. During his studies in Beirut, he mastered French very well, which allowed him to read some scientific stories and French newspapers. He was attached to literature since his youth. He read books on heritage, and he was closely acquainted with the works of Mutanabbi and admired him, in addition to his extensive knowledge in many fields.
After his return to Jerusalem, Isaf al-Nashashibi worked as a professor of Arabic literature at the Salahiya School in Jerusalem. During World War I, he worked for the Palestinian government during the British Mandate, where he was appointed director of the Rashidiya School in 1918, and he immediately received a promotion to the rank of inspector of the Arabic language. In the schools of Palestine, he resigned in 1930 and devoted himself to his books and literature. He published selections from his readings in the Egyptian magazine “Al-Risala” under the title “Transfer of the Writer,” and he continued to publish them regularly between the years (1937-1947).
He immigrated to Cairo in 1947, where he had good relations with the poet Ahmed Shawqi.
In 1927, Al-Nashashibi participated in the Ahmed Shawqi Festival and pledged allegiance to the emirate of Arabic poetry. He organized evenings for the people of the pen, and was awarded the Jerusalem Medal for Culture and Arts in 19990.
