The prominent Palestinian poet, Haroun Hashem Rashid, died in Canada at the age of 93.
The poet Haroun Hisham Rashid was born in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City in 1927. He is one of the poets of the 1950s who were called the Poets of the Nakba or the Poets of Return.
The Palestinian poet wrote a large number of patriotic poems and poetry collections, including the collection “Ayedun.”
He served as Palestine's alternate delegate to the Arab League.
Various names were given to him, inspired by the stages of our people’s suffering. He is: the poet of the Nakba, the poet of return, the poet of the revolution, a name given to him by the martyr Khalil al-Wazir in 1967 after the poem “Land and Blood.” The Palestinian poet Izz al-Din al-Manasra called him “the poet of Resolution 194,” according to the agency. He published works of fiction, including: Years of Torment, Cairo 1970. He presented several studies, including: Combatant Poetry in the Occupied Territory, A City and a Poet: Haifa and Al-Buhairi, The Fighting Word in Palestine.
He also received several awards, including: the Jerusalem Medal in 1990, the first prize for poetic theater from ALECSO 1977, the first prize for Arabic poetry from Radio London 1988. About 90 of his poems were
selected and presented by the figures of Arab singing, and at the forefront of those who sang his poems were: Fairouz and Fayda. Kamel, Muhammad Fawzi, Karem Mahmoud, Muhammad Qandil, Muhammad Abdo, and Talal Maddah.
Fayrouz sang the poem “We will return, the nightingale told me,” in whose words Haroun said: “One day we will return to our neighborhood
and drown in the warmth of semen.. We will return.. no matter how much time passes.. and how far the distances become between us.. in my heart, be patient, and do not throw.. on a path Our return is weakened.”
He wrote four poetic plays, including “The Question” on stage in Cairo, starring Karam Mutawa and Suhair Al-Morshedy.
After the 1973 Transit War, he wrote the play “The Fall of Bar Lev” and presented it at the National Theater in Cairo in 1974, and the play “Birds of Thorns,” in addition to many serials and seven-part serials that he wrote for the Egyptian “Sawt Al-Arab” radio and a number of Arab radio stations.
On the other hand, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Saeb Erekat, mourned the poet Rashid in a tweet on his Twitter page.
