Information

Palestinian artist Bassam Al-Hajjar transformed a part of his home in Gaza City into his own art studio, where he spends his time on a daily basis, where he produces works of art, including pottery and murals, that rely on combining art with history.

In his simple workshop, the sixty-year-old artist carved some of the heritage works on the wall, some of which depict life in the Palestinian countryside and women’s work in sewing clothes, in addition to other sculptures that simulate the Islamic battles that Palestine witnessed.

For decades, Al-Hajjar combined the profession of housebuilders with sculpting works of art, resulting in dozens of sculptures inside the homes of Palestinians in Gaza that mimic Palestinian cities such as Jerusalem, Jaffa, and Acre, their landmarks such as the Dome of the Rock, and their rural nature.

Al-Hajjar told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed that he has at least 200 works of art inside his house, in addition to other works located in educational institutions or sold to some who wish to acquire these works.

He adds that he does not stop carving works that mostly symbolize the Palestinian heritage and the Islamic and Arab civilization, in an attempt to perpetuate them in the minds of the emerging generations in light of the tremendous technological development.

Al-Hajjar believes that there is a clear negligence in informing the younger generations about the history of Arab and Islamic civilizations, and knowing the features of that era and the most prominent battles that it witnessed, in addition to the most prominent personalities that shone at the time.
