Pianist Salim Abboud Ashkar was born in Nazareth. He began his musical studies at the Nazareth Conservatory, then majored in music at the High School of Science and Art in Jerusalem, later studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Maria Curcho and completed his studies at the Higher School of Music and Dance in Hanover with Ari Verdi. Ashkar first rose to prominence with a performance at Carnegie Hall at the age of 22, and has since embarked on a distinguished international career. Among the orchestras he has performed with are: the Mozart Orchestra in Paris, the Royal Concert-Ghipau Orchestra (Netherlands), the National Orchestra of Lyon, the National Symphony of Polish Radio, and the Symphony Orchestras of London, Germany, Vienna, Helsinki, Luxembourg, Atlanta, Detroit, St. Louis, Vancouver, and Tokyo. Abboud Ashkar frequently collaborates with bands and with international conductors including David Upkeham, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Shai, Jacob Haroche, Petari Enkinen, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Meta, Riccardo Muti, Kazushi Ono and Nikolai Zneider. Abboud Ashkar frequently performs in concerts and has gained international acclaim as a dedicated Cameroonian musician and expert on Beethoven. He conducted a complete sonata cycle in Prague, Duisburg and the Berlin Concert Hall. Abboud Ashkar is the Artistic Director of the Galilee Orchestra (Polyphony), which brings together talented young musicians from the Arab community and some of the country's leading orchestra players - this selection aims to fulfill the Polyphony Association's vision and encourage cooperation between Arabs and Jews in Israel through musical excellence.
