Information
Salim Musa al-Ashi (1909-1984), a
Lebanese writer of the Syriac sect, born in Bethlehem, founded a spiritual
doctrine called Dahism in 1942.
Persecuted during the era of
President Bechara El-Khoury, he was imprisoned and his Lebanese nationality was
withdrawn from him. He emigrated to the United States of America, where he was
interested in publishing his views. He is famous for collecting antiques and
art drawings, and he founded the “Dahesh Museum of Art” in New York. He also
established a house to publish his many books and art books. The publishing
house he founded publishes a quarterly “Voice of Dahesh” in both Arabic and
English.
his life
His father is Musa al-Ashi and his
mother is Mrs. Shimouni Hanoush. His parents immigrated from Mesopotamia to Palestine
in the year 1906 AD, so he took refuge with his family in Palestine. In the
year 1909 AD, her father had a boy after three daughters, and they named him
(Salim). And as soon as the boy began to study, his parents left Jerusalem for
Haifa, then they moved with their children to Beirut in the year 1911 AD, and
after a few years the family members obtained Lebanese citizenship.
Salim was known in the circles of
Bethlehem as a unique magician, despite his modest work in renting and
repairing bicycles in Manger Square in the city.
After his father's death, he was
admitted to (Ghazir's orphanage), however, his writings numbered 150 books, in
which he dealt with various literary and intellectual topics, and his private
library contained more than a quarter of a million books of literary and
intellectual geniuses in the world.
And as soon as the young man
reached the age of twenty, a number of Palestinian intellectuals began to
gather around him, whose hearts were inclined to spiritual matters. Among them was
the poet Mutlaq Abd al-Khaliq, the author of the Divan al-Rahil, and the
notable Tawfiq al-Asrawi, who died on January 10, 1937 AD.
In the year 1929 AD, when he
reached the age of twenty, Salim Al-Ashi changed his name to “Dahesh” (a
nickname given to him by a journalist) because his works violated nature.
In 1933, he had finished writing
his first book, “The Secrets of the Gods” (in two parts), and before the end of
the same year, he completed his second book, “The Harp of the Gods” (also in
two parts), and his third book, “The Lying of Death.” Then his books continued
to reach nearly 150 years. He is the author of various literary genres, such as
sentimental literature, novel, story, autobiography, travel literature,
thoughts, and religious literature. He also started collecting paintings since
1930 until he collected more than two thousand artworks in 1976. He established
the “Daheshist Museum,” and he began to correspond with artists, buy their
paintings, or ask them to draw paintings, defining their themes and
descriptions for them.
I love to see the country's urban,
cultural, historical, natural and social features, and to search for artistic
crafts to buy. He recorded his observations and impressions in a series of 22
parts, which he called “The Amazing Journeys Around the Globe.”
On March 23, 1942, Dr. Dahesh
announced in Beirut a spiritual message in which he called on people to take
the essence of their religions away from their pagan husks or manifestations.
He also called them to human fraternity of different races and nationalities,
and to believe that they - like all creatures - are subject to a just spiritual
system that eliminates them - according to their entitlement - by reincarnation
on earth or in other worlds until they are able to ascend spiritually by their
will, and finally integrate into the world. m soul .
Dr. Dahesh was arrested on August
28, 1944, and imprisoned until September 8, 1944. The next day (September 9) he
was deported to Aleppo (Syria), after President Bechara El-Khoury issued a
decree stripping him of his Lebanese nationality. After the overthrow of
President Bechara El-Khoury in September 1952, the new Lebanese government
issued a decree on February 6, 1953 to restore the Lebanese nationality to him.
Then, on March 24 of the same year, the President of the Republic, Camille
Chamoun, issued a decree annulling the deportation decree.
