Farouk Ibrahim Mawasi (Hebrew: פארוק מואסי‎) is a Palestinian writer, critic and poet. He was born in Baqa al-Gharbiya (October 11, 1941 AD - June 26, 2020), to parents from a poor family.

Biography
Farouk memorized many Quranic chapters and religious hymns since his youth. In the year 1957, the secondary school in Baqa al-Gharbiya closed its doors, so he joined al-Taybeh secondary school, where he finished his secondary education there in 1959, and soon he worked in the local press, and as a result he was appointed as a teacher in February 1961, and he remained in the teaching corps in primary, preparatory and secondary schools. In different schools, until he was retired starting in September 1996, but he worked as a lecturer at Al-Qasimi College in Baqa Al-Gharbia (1989-2018). In 2007, he was awarded the title of “Senior Lecturer A = First Class”. On March 27, 2011, he was awarded a professorship.

He was the head of the Arabic language department there (until September 2010), after he was the dean of student affairs (2002-2006), and the head of the Arabic language center there (2002-2006). He lectured at the Arab College in Haifa (starting from 1998-2007). He worked as a guide for writing research papers for Arab secondary school students (1995-1994), and was appointed as a member of the Committee for Preparing the Arabic Grammar Curriculum at the University of Haifa (in 1984) and as a member of the Committee for a Special Curriculum for Teaching Arabic Language and Heritage for Arab Schools, and as a member of the Higher Committee for Language Affairs Arabic. He held the position of Vice President of the Arabic Language Academy in occupied Palestine (2004-2007). Upon the founding of the new official academy in 2007, he was chosen to be a member. Upon the founding of the Al Qasimi Academy for Language and Literature, he was chosen to be a member of its research committee.

He was a member of the People's Council for Culture and Arts, and a member of the Literature Department (the Arab representative in the People's Council). He was also a member of the Arab Section of the Culture Council, and a member of the Writers' Council (from 1992 to 2000) and then he was a member of the People's Council for Children's Literature. Mawasi served as president of the Arab Writers Association within the Federation of Writers Associations in the country (1995-1982), and was the only Arab representative in the public administration. Upon the founding of the Arab Writers Union, Farouk served as its vice president (1980-1993).

Since 2003, he has held the position of Vice President of the Syndicate of Writers in Different Languages. In the field of editing, he was chosen to be the editor-in-chief of “Mashaweer” magazine - the magazine of the Arab Writers Association - (1978-1980), and he was a member of the editorial board of “Al-Jadeed” magazine (1990-1993), and a member of the editorial board of magazine (48), He was also a member of the editorial board of “Mawaqif” magazine, and a member of the editorial board of “Jama’a” magazine.

He was a member of the editorial board of the Hebrew magazine: “Gag” (Hebrew: גג), and a member of the editorial board of the magazine “The Complex” at the Al Qasimi Academy.

Mawasi participated in academic festivals and conferences inside and outside the country, and his pen was active in the local press and the press abroad, by presenting literary, political and social articles.

Mawasi had political activities in Arab-Jewish circles. He was one of the founders of the Progressive Peace Movement. Prior to his resignation, he was appointed as a member of the Central Committee of the movement. This is the only time that Mawasi officially joined a party.

As for the academic achievement, it began at Bar-Ilan University, where in 1970 he studied the subjects of Arabic language and education. In 1973, he continued his studies to obtain a master's degree in Arabic literature. This was done for him in 1976 (the thesis was “The Language of Poetry at Badr Shaker Al-Sayyab and its Connection to the Language of Ancient Sources”), and during that he obtained a teaching certificate for the Arabic language. Mawasi joined Tel Aviv University to submit his doctoral dissertation entitled “Poetry of the Diwanists: Akkad, Al-Mazni, and Shukri” under the supervision of Professor Matti Peled.

His poems have been translated into some languages, the most prominent of which were: “The Sorrows You Did Not Understand” in Hebrew, and “I Came to You.”

Mawasi was known for delivering numerous lectures in secondary schools, universities, supplementary courses for teachers, and in various educational centers. He participated in a significant number of international conferences in various universities in Jordan, in Germany and the University of Sousse in Tunisia. The participations in what is called in schools “the year of the Arabic language” (starting in 1991) were also known about him, and he was chosen to be a judge in literary competitions in the country and abroad. He was also known for his support for young writers, for whom he established the “Literary Workshop” from 1980 to 1995.

He won the sabbatical award for creativity from the Ministry of Culture in 1989, then again in 2005.
