Sari Hanafi is a Palestinian writer and Associate Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Arab Journal of Sociology (Idafat). He has worked as a consultant for the United Nations and the World Bank, was a member of the Executive Office of the Arab Sociological Association, and previously served as Director of the Palestinian Refugees and Diaspora Center in Ramallah.

Hanafi is the author of numerous books, including State of Exception and Resistance in the Arab World, The Emergence of the Globalized Palestinian Elite: Donors, International Organizations, and Local NGOs, and Power and Associations in the Arab World.

He was elected as the first Arab member of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association since its establishment in 1948.
