Albert Arsene Agazarian (1950 - January 30, 2020) [1] [2] ( Armenian : Ալպերթ Աղազարեան ) is a Palestinian- Armenian historian and researcher [3] , known for leading the Palestinian media delegation to the Madrid Conference in 1991 alongside Hanan Ashrawi .
His life
Albert Agazarian was born in 1950 in the Armenian neighborhood of the Old City of Jerusalem to displaced parents from Anatolia to escape the massacre that was supervised by the Union and Progress Party ruling the Ottoman Empire at the time with Armenians. [3] He studied at Birzeit College (later to become Birzeit University ), [5] where he obtained a diploma in Middle Eastern studies in 1970, then moved to the American University of Beirut , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in political science , after which he obtained a Master's degree in Contemporary Arab Studies from Georgetown University in 1979. [4]
Albert worked in Al-Quds newspaper between 1973-1976, and was a founding member of the Arab Intellectual Forum Association in Jerusalem in 1977, [6] He also worked in translation , as he was fluent in Arabic, English, French, Armenian, Hebrew, Turkish and Spanish, and worked as a professor of history and then director of relations General Studies at Birzeit University in the period from 1979 to 2002.
In 2006, he received a high medal from King Albert II of Belgium in appreciation for the services he provided to explain the issue of Jerusalem in particular and the Palestinian issue in general on the international scene. [4] [5]
He published books in partnership with other authors, the first a book entitled “Outside Jerusalem?: Christian Voices from the Holy Land” in 1997, and the second a book entitled “Christian Voices from Jerusalem: The Eve of the Third Millennium” in 1998. He also participated in a study in a collective book published in French under the title “The Mediterranean Basin between Reason and Madness” in 1998. [1] [4]
He died on January 30, 2020 in Jerusalem , [6] at the age of 70.
