Information
Amira Shaheen is a Palestinian doctor from Jabal al-Mukabber in Jerusalem and the head of the branch of the Organization of Women in Science for the Developing World in Palestine. She has held the degree of Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at An-Najah National University in Nablus since 2011, where she is working on developing a research project that focuses on strengthening the health system's response in cases of sexual violence and verifying the health system's readiness to detect female victims of violence, and refer them to the concerned authorities. She is a member of both the Research Ethics Committee at An-Najah National University as well as several scientific societies, including: Childcare Information for All and the International Society for Epidemiology. She has published many of her research work and won the Alsevier USS International Prize for Women Scientists in Developing Countries in 2019 for her professional excellence in her scientific career. This was the first Palestinian woman to win this award.
She received her MA in Public Health from Al Quds University and her PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2009. In the same year, she worked as a research assistant at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her scientific research focuses primarily on women's and children's health, injuries and violence, and environmental and mental health. Her research has also appeared in several leading international journals in her field.
Achievements and Awards
She received the OSD Award from Alsevier International Foundation for Pioneering Women Scientists in Developing Countries in 2019. The award focuses on highlighting the role of women in developing countries, especially women entrepreneurs working on scientific research projects
