Frank Drunken-Rashid (1895-1983) was a Palestinian-American politician and lawyer born in the village of Rina in the Galilee to a Palestinian Christian family. He headed the Washington branch of the Palestinian National League in 1921, and was elected secretary of the Association of Americans Familiar with the Middle East in 1967. He became president of more than seventy lawyers and was the first Arab to hold a senior position in the US government.
Foundation
Sobhi Sakran Rashid was born in 1895 in the village of Al-Rina, located in the Lower Galilee region, northeast of the city of Nazareth. He is from an Eastern Orthodox Christian family. He studied in the school of his village Al-Rina and in the city of Nazareth at the Orthodox School. He taught a year in a Protestant school in his village.
Immigration to the United States
He fled to the United States in 1914. He fought with the American army in World War I, believing that it was a holy war to give freedom to the Arabs. Upon arriving in Washington, he changed his unfamiliar Arabic name to Frank Drunken. He obtained a professor's degree in political law from Georgetown University after his discharge from the army and practiced law in Washington. He was appointed as a lawyer in one of the official departments and became the head of more than seventy lawyers and was the first Arab to hold a high position in the American government.
Work in the political field
Publishing articles on the Palestinian issue in the magazine (Al-Tarikh Al-Jari) and then in the (Washington Post) newspaper. He headed the Washington branch of the (Palestine National League) in 1921. He was elected secretary of the Association of Americans familiar with Middle Eastern affairs in 1967, whose first action was to send a message to President Lyndon Johnson to work to expedite the evacuation of the Israeli army from Arab lands. He spoke on behalf of the Assembly in 1968 at the Republican convention to nominate Nixon for the presidency on the situation in the Middle East and the crisis situation, and was threatened and shot twice, but remained a fighter in the battle.
In 1965 Frank Drunken visited Jordan inviting then-Prime Minister Wasfi al-Tal to witness the deployment of the Jordanian army on the border with Israel. Frank spent a period in Jordan, during which he researched the Arab situation in general and the situation between the Arabs and Israel in particular.
his personal life
Frank Drunken Rashid was interested in uniting his Al Rashid family in the diaspora and Arab countries, where he began collecting information, names and photos. Rashid's family currently resides in the village of Al-Rina, the city of Nazareth and Haifa, in addition to dozens of diaspora in the United States and Canada. He published a book in 1979 called The Roots of the Rashids, and he has published many other books. He died on January 30, 1983.
