Dr. Uthman, who received his M.D. from the American University of Beirut, has been a faculty member at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) since 2008. Prior to joining WCMC-Q, Dr. Uthman was a faculty member at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Department of Neurology, since 1991 and in the school's Department of Neuroscience since 1996. Dr. Uthman has taught medical and graduate courses in neurology, epilepsy and electroencephalography (EEG).

Dr. Uthman's research interests include clinical studies in the treatment of epilepsy, pharmacokinetics of antiepileptic drugs, seizures in the elderly, treatment of acute seizure disorders and status epilepticus and neurostimulation for treatment of epilepsy. His pioneering pilot studies regarding the safety and feasibility of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in humans brought this novel method of therapy to the frontiers of modern treatment of intractable epilepsy. He has served on a number of committees and boards, ranging from 12-year service on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, VA Medical Center, Gainesville, Florida to his more recent service on the Research and Development Committee, North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. Dr. Uthman is an opinion leader in the field of epilepsy and serves as member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida and Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Dr. Uthman is board certified in Neurology and clinical neurophysiology and serves as an examiner for the Americal Board of Clinical Neurophysiology.
