Information
He was born in Nablus in 1925 and studied at the Hashemite School and the Salahiyya School. He passed the Palestinian Higher Education Certificate Examination (Matriculation Examination) with distinction in mathematics. He worked as a mathematics, science, and art teacher in Anabta schools in 1943, and later in Baqa al-Gharbiyya, Deir Istiya, al-Fadiliya Secondary School in Tulkarm, the Salahiyya and Aishiyya schools, and also taught at al-Najah School. In 1953, he contracted with the Islamic Scientific College in Amman as a mathematics teacher, where he spent twenty-four years. Each summer vacation, he produced a remarkable work. In 1954, he authored the first part of his book on plane geometry, followed the next year by the second part, which the Ministry of Education decided to include in the curriculum of all schools in the Kingdom. In 1956, he completed the third part.
He continued to write mathematics books, which were adopted by the Ministry of Education for its school curricula. In 1966, he turned his attention to traffic engineering and published articles, supported by maps, in the newspaper al-Jihad, explaining the traffic management system in Amman using traffic lights based on the green wave pattern.
In 1996, he was elected to the national team tasked with developing mathematics and gradually introducing modern mathematics. He was also involved in chess and headed the Jordanian chess delegation at the Chess Olympiads held in Libya in 1976, Argentina in 1978, Malta in 1980, Switzerland in 1982, Greece in 1984, the UAE in 1986, and Greece again in 1988. He was awarded the International Chess Federation (FIDE) certificate as an international arbiter.
In 1989, he joined Al-Quds Open University as a graphic designer in the Production and Development Department, where he designed and produced a television chess program broadcast on Jordanian satellite television. Professor Abdul Malik Arafat also has other achievements in the artistic field, including winning the competition to compose the national anthem, which is sung every morning in schools throughout the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Radio Oman also recorded for him the Teacher's Anthem, the Student's Anthem, the Pilgrims' Anthem, the Birth Anthem, and the Mother's Anthem.
His talents and creativity extended to authoring eight English language handwriting books that were adopted by the Ministry of Education in all schools of the Kingdom.
