I, Maher Rafiq Ragheb Anabtawi, a political and economic analyst and former diplomat, am pleased to write these lines. I was delighted by your desire to expand our knowledge about prominent figures from Nablus, so I would like to mention my late uncle, Nazmi Husni Suleiman Anabtawi. He was born in 1890 in Nablus and passed away in 1996 in Beirut. His mother was from Burqa, from the Saif family, and was my grandfather's first wife. He had three sons: Dr. Issam (a physician and heart surgeon), Dr. Samir (a political scientist), and Engineer Nabil. He also had two daughters: Dr. Aida (a physician and university professor) and Mrs. Najwa. He earned his master's degree from Yale University in the United States in 1924 in the fields of political science and international relations. He held numerous official positions during the British Mandate for Palestine and occupied academic posts at the American University of Beirut.
He was awarded a doctorate from Yale University 40 years after receiving his master's degree. He possessed an independent political mind, and I, his nephew, resembled him most in appearance and voice. I feel he was a mentor to me in... His method of thinking was sharp-witted, and he had the ability to read between the lines and understand what lay behind the words. He maintained kinship ties and was characterized by generosity, refined taste, and upright character. Description fails to do him justice. He traveled to America in 1916 and returned to Palestine in 1927.
He was kind to his relatives, but he only got along with those whose ideas were close to his. He was one of the rare few. We ask God to have mercy on him and on us and to bring me together with him in the bliss of His Paradise and under His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His.
