Zakaria Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar was born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Deir al-Balah Governorate in the central Gaza Strip on March 7, 1965, to a Palestinian refugee family originally from the depopulated town of Majdal in the occupied Gaza Strip. He is the brother of the leaders Yahya Sinwar and Muhammad Sinwar. He completed his primary education at the UNRWA school in the Khan Younis camp and his secondary education at Khan Younis High School, graduating in 1983. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the Faculty of Arts at the Islamic University of Gaza in 1993, a general diploma in history from Al-Aqsa University in 1997, and a master's degree in history from the Department of History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts at the Islamic University of Gaza in 2003. His thesis focused on the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip (1967-1973). He received his doctorate in history from the Institute of Arab Research and Studies in Cairo in 2006.
Sinwar worked as an employee in the Public Relations Department at the Islamic University, and became a lecturer in the History Department at the Faculty of Arts at the Islamic University, and obtained the rank of professor. He was the director of the Oral History Center at the Islamic University between (2000-2002), and a member of the teaching staff at the Lebanese Staff Academy.
Al-Sinwar supervised several master's and doctoral theses, edited numerous research papers and studies, and worked with several Palestinian and Arab research centers. He has published several books and studies, including: Lectures on the History of the Jews and the Zionist Movement (2001), Palestine: Its History and Cause (2002), The History of Palestine Through the Ages (2002), The Gaza District in the Early Ottoman Era: A Study in Political and Cultural History (co-authored, 2004), The Experience of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in Israeli Prisons (2005), The Role of Ord Wingate in Developing Zionist Military Capabilities (2007), The Displacement of the Inhabitants of the Gaza District: A Comparative Study Between the Palestinian and Zionist Oral Narratives (2008), The Zionist Revisionist View of Arabs and Muslims (1925-1948) (co-authored, 2013), The History of Palestine in the Mid-Ottoman Era (co-authored, 2010), and The Massacres Subjected to the Inhabitants of Jaffa in the Last Third of the Eighteenth Century AD (2011), The Zionist Industry in Palestine (1918-1948) (Joint, 2016), and A Critique of the Ideas of Solomon’s Temple as Presented in the Torah Text (2018).
Media outlets reported that he was subjected to an assassination attempt by the occupation through the bombing of his tent in the Nuseirat camp in Deir al-Balah Governorate on May 18, 2026, which led to him being seriously injured and the martyrdom of three of his sons. Some media outlets reported his martyrdom. It is worth mentioning that the occupation assassinated one of his sons in a bombing of the Nuseirat camp on March 6, 2024.
