Sufyan Abdul Rahman Othman Tayeh (Abu Osama; August 20 , 1971 – December 2, 2023 ) was a Palestinian physics professor and lecturer . He served as President of the Islamic University of Gaza from August 2023 until his martyrdom during the Israeli war on Gaza in 2023. [ He holds a professorship in theoretical physics and applied mathematics and had worked as an assistant to the university's vice president for academic affairs for several years.
His life
Sufian Tayeh was born in Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip on August 20, 1971. He received his school education in the UNRWA schools in the camp. He obtained a BA in Physics from the Islamic University of Gaza in 1994 and began working at the university in the same year.
On March 15, 2005, the Israeli occupation arrested him while passing through the Rafah land crossing into Egypt to complete the procedures for submitting his doctoral dissertation at Ain Shams University . Later, the occupation prevented the lawyer of the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights from meeting with him.
He won the Palestine Islamic Bank Award for Scientific Research for the year 2019 and 2020.
He received the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Young Arab Scientists, and on November 22, 2021, it was announced that Al-Taieh was among the top 2% of researchers worldwide, according to a study conducted by Elsevier Publishing House and Stanford University in the United States.
On March 3, 2022, the Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies at the Islamic University announced his victory among the names of the winners of the University Award for Scientific Research for the year 2021.
He was appointed as the holder of the UNESCO Chair for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences since March 28, 2023, after the Islamic Universities in Gaza, Al-Azhar University in Gaza and Al-Aqsa University renewed the agreement signed with UNESCO .
His death
Sufyan Tayeh and his family were killed in an airstrike carried out by the Israeli Air Force that targeted the Al-Faluja area west of Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip during the Israeli war launched on the Gaza Strip in response to Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa , which began on October 7, 2023.
