Professor Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Rabei

universities. Professor Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Rabei is internationally known for
his contemporary and new specialization in Islamic thought and the comparison of

teaching, lectures, articles, and abundant books of knowledge, he tried to
build a bridge of communication, understanding, and interaction between the

Professor Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Rabie
was born in the Palestinian city of Nazareth in December 1956 and died suddenly
in July 2011, at the age of 54, following a heart attack while he was sleeping
in his hotel room, in Amman, Jordan. And he was going to travel on the same day
back to Canada, and he asked the hotel reception to tell him when the taxi
arrived at the hour specified for his travel, and he did not come, and when
they went to his room to tell him that the taxi had arrived and after opening
the door by force when he did not answer, they found him dead in his bed.
The family of Professor Ibrahim
Muhammad Hazaa Abu Rabi` is a simple family from the city of Nazareth in
Palestine. His father, Muhammad Hazaa Abu Rabi`, was known for his patriotism,
faith, and good morals, and his mother, Houriya Salim Abdul Hadi, who was known
in the neighborhood and in Nazareth for her patience, wisdom, and love for her children.
Professor Ibrahim is the fourth of 10 male brothers and 3 female sisters, born
to this Christian family, and most of them still live in the city of Nazareth,
except for two, one in the United States and one in Germany.
Professor Ibrahim was educated in
Nazareth Elementary Schools and Bishop's Secondary School, and he obtained a
baccalaureate degree with distinction in 1980 from Birzeit University in
Palestine, after which he received a four-year scholarship.
He traveled to the United States of
America in 1979 to complete his postgraduate studies, and obtained a master’s
degree specializing in political science from the University of Cincinnati in
1982 and a scholarship for teaching before he went to the University of Pennsylvania.
He also obtained a second master’s degree, this time in religious sciences, and
a doctorate in studies Islamic Studies in 1987 from Temple University.
He also worked as a lecturer at
Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Texas at Austin, after
which he got a professorship at the University of Hartford at the MacDonald
Institute for Graduate Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at the
beginning of 1991.
In 2006, he was awarded a Fulbright
Fellowship in Singapore-Indonesia at the Strategic Defense Institute at Nanyang
Technological University. He was also one of the principal editors of Muslim
World magazine.
In the year 2008, Professor Ibrahim
Muhammad Hazaa Abu Rabie was chosen at the University of Edmonton in Alberta,
Canada, to be the first head of the Department of Islamic Sciences. The first
of its kind in Canada, and he became the first president of this teaching
center specialized in Islamic research. Among his favorite specializations was
open and constructive dialogues between Christian and Islamic religions and
traditions. Among these interests, he singled out the issue of contemporary
Islamic thought, focusing on religion, society and Sufism.

Prof. Ibrahim Abu Rabei devoted
himself wholeheartedly to research and writing, and his writings were full of
titles that increased his scholarly credit and international fame. Many Western
and Orientalist writers wrote about the significance of political Islam, but
the Islamic voices remained largely silent, and for this reason he took it upon
himself to explain and show moderate political Islam that did not emerge to the
international and local space and remained imprisoned in the stomachs of books
for Muslim thinkers in the East, and no one cared to highlight their voices and
thoughts. To the public, and only the extremist ideology remained that
dominated the local and international arena, which led to the spread of fear of
Islam and Muslims in what is scientifically known as (Islamophobia), and a
large segment of people in Western countries became convinced that Islam is the
enemy that must be fought relentlessly.
Professor Ibrahim Abu Rabea has
written and edited 19 books and many books translated from and into English,
and many articles, lectures, press interviews and video conferences.
