Imad Al-Barghouti (April 30, 1962 - ) is a Palestinian professor of space physics at Al-Quds University from the town of Beit Rima , north of the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate . He won second place in the Palestine International Award for Excellence and Creativity for his model in space physics.
Early life and education
Imad Ahmed Hamed Al-Barghouthi was born in 1962. He obtained his high school diploma in 1980 from Our Lady of the Annunciation Greek Catholic School. He obtained his bachelor's degree in 1985 from the Faculty of Science, Physics Department, University of Jordan . He obtained his master's degree in 1988 in nuclear physics from the University of Jordan , and his doctorate in 1994 in space science physics from Utah State University in the United States of America . He worked for a short period at NASA .
Arrest
On July 16, 2020, Barghouti was arrested at an Israeli checkpoint near the town of Anata in the Jerusalem District while on his way home. He was not charged at the time, but was brought to a hearing on July 23, 2020. On August 2, 2020, he appeared in court and was charged with incitement and supporting organizations hostile to Israel. One element of the indictment stated that Barghouti praised a member of his family who was connected to the Palestinian resistance operation of bombing the Sbarro restaurant .
On August 10, 2020, he published a letter requesting his release, so that he could teach online and continue supervising graduate students in the academic year beginning in September 2020. The Israeli chief justice ordered his release on bail on September 2, 2020. Hours before his scheduled release, the Israeli military commander in the West Bank placed him under administrative detention for four months, which was then extended by four months, then another four months.
