Professor Azza Darwazah is the founding director of the Institute of Communications and Connected Systems at University College London (UCL), which has over 130 professors and researchers and is one of the largest institutes of its kind in Europe. He is also the head of the Department of Communications Engineering at UCL and a professor of communications engineering at the University of London (since 2006).
Professor Darwazah was born in Syria in 1963. He moved to Jordan in 1976, where he completed his secondary education and earned his bachelor's degree. He then moved to the United Kingdom in 1984 to pursue postgraduate studies. He has worked in academia in the UK since 1991 and has been a pioneer in developing new technologies and designs for optical and wireless communication systems, which have contributed significantly to the advancement of scientific research in this field globally. He is the author/co-author of over 300 scientific papers and four books in the field of electronic and communications engineering. He serves as a consultant to governments and governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the United Nations, the electronics and communications industries and their regulators, investment firms, and venture capital companies. He has also advised numerous law firms in the UK, Europe, and the USA, and has served as an expert witness in communications patent cases before courts in the UK and other countries.
In addition to his scientific and academic work, Druze is active in solidarity work with Palestinian and Arab causes in the United Kingdom, including being one of the three founders of the Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian People in Manchester (1986), as well as participating in the founding of the Arab British Society in the United Kingdom (2008), and the British Palestinian Policy Council (2016).
He is a member of several advisory and academic boards, including the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Palestine Studies (from 2013), the Advisory Committee of the Centre for Palestine Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (during the years 2015-2021), and the Board of Directors of the Centre for Lebanese Studies (from 2021).
