Information

Palestinian educational designer Mohammed Daghmin won first place in Palestine in the "Falling Walls" competition, hosted by Birzeit University last month, for his fiber optic screen idea.

With his first-place finish in Palestine, Daghmin will travel to Berlin to compete against 100 innovators from 50 countries around the world, in addition to participating in the main conference, which will feature various presentations by a number of prominent scientists.

The new technology relies on optical fibers to manufacture the "pixels" that make up the screens, reducing the amount of electrical energy consumed and doubling the quality and color clarity of the screens.

Through his in-depth research, Daghmin discovered that the way pixels work has not changed over the years, and that their evolution has been limited to their size and the type of materials they are made of. Therefore, he sought to create a new type of pixel that works differently and has unique features.

After discussing the idea with a number of specialized academics, Mohammed was able to build a model that mimics the proposed design. The new pixel is only one-third the size of a conventional pixel, which increases the pixel density and doubles the image's clarity and color quality. Furthermore, screens using this technology will be able to harness electrical energy to charge smart devices.
