About the project
Combining his passion for neurosurgery and innovation, Walid entered the tenth season of Stars of Science with an idea that would contribute not only to patient welfare, but also to the innovation ecosystem in the Arab region.
To enhance the monitoring of stroke patients in the intensive care unit, Walid developed a portable device that analyzes retinal arteries, indicating whether a patient requires intensive monitoring or urgent medical care. This technology improves the quality of brain monitoring and gives medical staff greater efficiency and additional options for monitoring patients during the critical recovery period.
After winning the first prize, and before the COVID-19 pandemic , Walid received additional funding from Roth Aachen University Hospital in Germany and received approval to begin a study to further develop his technology. "The entire world has come to a standstill due to the coronavirus outbreak, including funding and research. With a global shortage of medical professionals, doctors specializing in various fields have been directed to treat patients with the virus. I am honored to be part of this fight, even if it means postponing my journey into the world of innovation."
Beyond Stars of Science
With his compassionate nature, Walid, as a doctor, had to simultaneously confront a new virus and a global pandemic. Devoted to his work and fulfilling his duties as a neurosurgeon, Walid was also present, working long hours to assist patients suffering from a variety of health issues.
Following his success on the show, Walid worked to support Arab youth in their pursuit of excellence through active engagement on social media. A year after his win, Walid returned to Stars of Science as a co-host, setting a new goal: "My time as a co-host was very exciting and completely different from being a competitor under pressure. Sharing my scientific knowledge and experience with the candidates reawakened my passion for mentoring aspiring talent in our region. I can't imagine what it's like to be a jury member, and I hope to one day experience that myself!"
Walid in his mirror
Walid recalls his time on Stars of Science, noting that the relationships he built during his time on the program were the best aspects of his experience. He will never forget the moments he shared with his fellow contestants, nor the discussions he had over morning coffee in the lab.
Addressing promising Arab youth and looking to the region's future, Walid says, "The key to great achievements in the world of innovation lies in the knowledge accumulated through connections established over the years. Success is not a destination. It's a journey!"
