Information
Issam Hammad was born in Jerash in 1925 and studied at An-Najah National School in Nablus. His father was killed by British occupation forces in 1936, a loss that deeply affected him. He completed his secondary education at the Rashidiya School in Jerusalem. He worked in the Arabic section of the Palestinian Broadcasting Service in Jerusalem, eventually rising to the position of Assistant Program Supervisor. He and his colleagues moved the broadcasting equipment from Jerusalem to Ramallah and continued broadcasting after the end of the British Mandate and the entry of Arab military units into Palestine on May 15, 1948. In 1949, he worked as a supervisor of the announcers' department at Damascus Radio for about three years. He then returned to Ramallah to work as a program supervisor at Jordanian Radio.
He returned to Damascus to work as an advisor and general manager at the Syrian Broadcasting Corporation, and from there he went to Germany to become head of the Arabic section at German Radio. He continued in this role until 1965, during which time he specialized in television writing and directing. He also began preparing a doctoral dissertation entitled "The Impact of Media on the Development of Modern Arabic Literature." However, a royal pardon for all political exiles, including Issam Hammad, prevented him from defending it. He has twelve books on culture, media, poetry, and theater.
