Information

The scientist Hanna Musa Nasser was born in the city of Jaffa, the land of sad oranges, in 1935. Although he is considered one of the most important nuclear physicists, he has been known in recent years through his role in supervising all kinds of Palestinian elections and developing Birzeit University.

Nasser studied at Birzeit College and obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the American University of Beirut. Later, he obtained a doctorate in nuclear physics in 1967 from Purdue University in the United States of America.

In 1972, Nasser headed a team that included both Gabi Baramki and Ramzi Rayhan to develop “Birzeit College” into a university, later becoming the university’s first president until his retirement in 2004.

was deported by the Israeli occupation authorities to Lebanon in 1974 without bringing any charges against him, despite what was announced that he had carried out incitement against the occupation. During the period of exile, he remained president of Birzeit University and managed his duties from an office in Jordan that was specially established for this purpose. The administration regularly visited him in Amman to discuss major decisions.

Nasser served on the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization between 1981 and 1984 and served as Chairman of the Palestine National Fund between 1982 and 1984.

In the period between 1977 and 1984, Nasser was elected as an independent member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and in 1993, following the Oslo Accords, he was allowed to return to Palestine with other deportees. In 2002, the late Palestinian President appointed him to head the Palestinian Elections Commission. It is an independent body established by the Palestinian National Authority in 1995. It supervised the Palestinian presidential elections in 2005, the Legislative Council elections in 2006, in addition to the local elections in 2012 and 2017. May God extend and protect Hanna Nasser, a Palestinian icon who serves a just cause.

It remains to say that there are hundreds of Palestinian scholars who have contributed greatly to the process and development of the Palestinian national identity that is difficult to erase, disappear and dissolve, and for this reason I see that the identity is not in danger as the products of the Palestinian people continue and develop, and at the forefront of them is science and knowledge.
