Jad Abd al-Karim Ibrahim Abd al-Fattah Tayeh (Abu Mazen; born on September 12, 1950 - assassinated on September 15, 2006), a politician, military commander and Palestinian brigade, from the Palestinian city of Tulkarm, is one of the leaders of the Fatah movement and the Palestine Liberation Organization, and one of the military leaders in the Liberation Army The Palestinian, and one of the leaders of the Unified Security Service in the Palestine Liberation Organization, and one of the leaders of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service, and he is the head of Palestinian external security, and the head of international relations in the Palestinian General Intelligence Service. Major General Gad Abdel Karim Ibrahim Abdel Fattah Tayeh was born on September 12, 1950 to a family from the city of Tulkarm in the West Bank.

 

His military and political life

In 1968, he joined the ranks of the Fatah movement and the Palestinian revolution.

He worked as an assistant to Atef Bseisu.

Since the seventies, he has been one of the leaders of the unified security apparatus in the Palestine Liberation Organization, along with leaders Atef Bseiso and Salah Khalaf.

His assassination and reactions

He was assassinated in Gaza City at noon on Friday, September 15, 2006, when military militias calling themselves "Jaish al-Islam" attacked the vehicle of Major General Tayeh near the home of the then Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. The attack led to the killing of Major General Tayeh, in addition to four of his companions.

 

Details of the assassination

At about 1:30 local Palestinian time, Major General Jad and four of his companions left with his vehicle at noon on Friday, September 15, 2006, from the headquarters of the Intelligence Service in Gaza City, known as “the headquarters of the ship.” It collided with it. Immediately, the gunmen opened fire on Major General Gad's vehicle, then another vehicle of the gunmen came from behind and fired heavily at Major General Gad and his companions.

 

Immediately after Major General Gad and his companions fell to the ground, the gunmen approached the vehicle and searched it. At the same time, a number of other gunmen approached the victims, and seized their weapons and mobile phones, in addition to the briefcase of Major General Gad's documents. One of the gunmen also shot from a zero distance on the victims who were still breathing. Estimated time taken for the assassination of about eight minutes. The attack took place just 30 meters from the home of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

 

Reactions after the assassination

The crime was met with official, popular and factional condemnation from all Palestinian and Arab circles:

 

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned the assassination, and issued strict instructions to all security services to take immediate action in order to uncover the circumstances of the crime and arrest those involved, and ordered the formation of an investigation committee.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his outrage at the incident. President Abbas asked Ismail Haniyeh to hand over the suspects for interrogation before Saturday, September 23, 2006. President Abbas decided to freeze talks and contacts with Hamas until the handover of the killers of Major General Gad and his companions.

Fatah spokesman in Tulkarm condemned the assassination of the son of Tulkarm, Major General Jad Tayeh and four of his companions in Gaza.

The Palestinian Prime Minister at the time, Ismail Haniyeh, denounced the crime, and considered it a desperate attempt to shuffle the cards and obstruct efforts to form a national unity government.

The Fatah movement condemned the assassination, and the Fatah movement demanded that Hamas hand over the suspects to the Public Prosecution as soon as possible.

All Palestinian forces, factions and popular activities denounced the assassination, and considered it a heinous crime that shows the exacerbation of the state of security chaos and aims to sow discord and disturb the atmosphere before the formation of the national unity government.

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights denounced the assassination, and demanded that serious investigations be conducted.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights strongly condemned the heinous murder, and called for serious investigations into this crime, with the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Investigations

On September 15, 2006, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas formed a commission of inquiry following the assassination.

On September 16, 2006, the Palestinian government spokesman confirmed that there are no clear indications so far as to who was behind the operation.

On September 16, 2006, the investigation committee demanded to obtain surveillance camera images of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's home and its surroundings, where Haniyeh's home is not more than 50 meters away from the scene of the accident.

On September 17, 2006, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights called for serious investigations to be carried out.

On September 18, 2006, Fatah demanded from Hamas that the suspects in the operation be handed over to the Public Prosecution as soon as possible.

On September 21, 2006, Tawfiq Al-Tirawi, deputy head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service, held the Minister of Interior in the Hamas government, Saeed Siam, fully responsible for the crime, during a press conference held by Al-Tirawi in Ramallah to talk about the circumstances of the assassination.

On October 5, 2006, Jad Tayeh's wife denied her participation in the meeting of Interior Minister Said Siam regarding the investigations.

On October 9, 2006, the Palestinian Minister of Interior and National Security, Saeed Seyam, announced that the killers of Major General Jad had circulated their names at the crossings, and Seyam denied the relationship of those involved in the crime with Al-Qaeda.
