Hajj Ahmad Badawi, son of Sheikh Muhammad, son of Sheikh Mustafa Ashour, was born in Nablus to a wealthy soap-making father. He became a member of the municipal council and mayor, succeeding his father as head of the Commercial Court, which later became the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Abbasid Society, founded by Sheikh Abbas al-Khamash, an alliance of wealthy individuals outside the influence of ruling families. He built the al-Khader Mosque, which was then a small zawiya (Sufi lodge), fulfilling the will of his brother, Sheikh Amin Ashour, who bequeathed 27,000 piasters before his departure for Hajj in 1307 AH (1888/89 CE). He exported sesame to France, but exports were delayed due to a change in the French government's policy, resulting in the spoilage of enormous quantities valued at 106,000 French gold liras. He used to sit with a number of the city’s leaders, including, for example: “Sheikh Yusuf al-Tamimi, Sheikh Issa al-Hamid al-Qaddumi, Haj Ahmad al-Qasim, Sheikh Nimr al-Dari, Sheikh Abbas al-Khammas, Sheikh Munib Zaid al-Kilani, Amin Effendi Salah, Sheikh Abd al-Ilah Sufan, Muhammad Effendi Khalifa Touqan, and Abd al-Karim al-Yusuf Abd al-Hadi, who died in Nablus.”
