Adel al-Tamimi was born in Nablus, where he studied before traveling to Istanbul to further his education. He was elected to the administrative body of the Arab Society in 1918 and later became its Secretary-General. After the French occupation, he returned to Nablus and joined the Palestinian national movement, becoming one of its most prominent leaders. In 1921, he was a member of the Palestinian Arab delegation that traveled to Jordan. In 1923, he was a member of the Palestinian delegation to Switzerland to attend the Allied-Turkish Conference. He became a member of the Supreme Islamic Sharia Council and was later elected Vice-President of the Council under Hajj Amin al-Husseini. He then left for Lebanon to join Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the leader of the Palestinian national movement and head of the Arab Higher Committee. He secretly left Lebanon in late 1939 due to harassment by the French occupation.
He went to Iraq, from which he was forced to leave for Iran with Amin al-Husseini after the failure of Rashid al-Kilani’s movement in 1941. The British arrested him with a number of his companions in Ahwaz prison, then he was exiled to a second detention camp in Salisbury (Rhodesia). His health deteriorated as a result of the poor conditions of detention, and the British refused to transfer him to Lebanon or Egypt for treatment. He died, may God have mercy on him, in his detention camp.
