Shafiq Handal: A Salvadoran politician, born in Asulután, El Salvador, to Palestinian immigrants from Bethlehem. He was the Secretary General of the Communist Party of El Salvador and a member of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), which was formed from five opposition forces in El Salvador. In 1997, Handal was elected to the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly, where he led the FMLN party bloc. Handal was the FMLN candidate in the Salvadoran presidential elections.
