Information
Muhammad Ali al-Jabari (1900-1980) was the long-time mayor of Hebron , having been appointed by Jordan between 1948 and 1976.
British Mandate era
In 1940, the British Mandate appointed him Mayor of Hebron.
After the Nakba
After the Nakba, he opposed the Arab Higher Committee led by Hajj Amin al-Husseini and the All-Palestine Government headed by Ahmad Hilmi Abd al-Baqi , and chaired the Jericho Counter-Conference in 1948, calling for the annexation of the West Bank to East Jordan and the pledge of allegiance to King Abdullah bin al-Hussein (which happened in 1950).
Al-Jaabari held a number of official positions in the Senate, and as Minister of Agriculture , Justice , and Education in Jordan.
After the setback
After Israel occupied the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War , he proposed that Israel remain in power for five years, followed by the establishment of an autonomous Palestinian entity. Apparently, an agreement was reached with Israel that he would serve as prime minister of a new Palestinian state.
In the spring of 1972, al-Jabari participated in the municipal elections, which the Palestine Liberation Organization called for a boycott. He was prominently opposed to the violent nature of the fedayeen.
Al-Jabari died in 1980. He is related to Suleiman al-Jabari , the former Mufti of Jerusalem.
