"Muhammad Rashid" "Muhammad Ali" Ahmad al-Ja'bari (Abu Safwat; born May 1, 1942 in Hebron - died May 6, 2020 ) was a Palestinian politician . He was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hebron University , and the first Governor of Bethlehem Governorate . 

His life

Muhammad Rashid al-Jabari was born in Hebron on May 1, 1942 , during the British Mandate of Palestine . His father, Muhammad Ali al-Jabari, was mayor of Hebron from 1948 until the West Bank local elections in 1976 , and chairman of the Jericho Conference, which was held to support the unification of the West Bank with Jordan in 1950. 

Between 1967 and 1971, Al-Jabari worked as an educational supervisor, and in 1972 he assumed the duties of Director General of the Hebron District Education Directorate and continued in the position until 1996. 

Al-Jabari contributed to the establishment of Hebron University in 1971, and between 1978 and 1984 he was Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees. 

In 1996, he was appointed governor of Bethlehem Governorate , and was its first governor. He continued in the position until he was transferred to the Palestinian Ministry of Interior on October 4, 2001. 

His death

Al-Jabri died on May 6, 2020, corresponding to Ramadan 13, 1441 AH, at the age of 78. 

He was mourned by Hebron University in a statement.  Archbishop Atallah Hanna, Archbishop of Sebastia for the Greek Orthodox, also mourned him, describing him as: “ distinguished by his wisdom, sobriety, humility, humanity, and his constant keenness to establish a culture of love, brotherhood, coexistence, and national unity among all our people. ”
