Khaled Hassan Mohammed Sheikh Hassan (Abu Hassan; September 17 , 1945 – January 17 , 2011 ) was a Palestinian leader , politician and diplomat . He was born in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm .  He is the dean of Palestinian ambassadors ,  one of the most prominent founders of the Fatah movement ,  and one of its early leaders.  He is a leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization ,  and a member of the Palestinian National Council .  He served as the Palestinian ambassador to Uganda , Romania , India and Yemen . 

His life

Khaled Hassan Muhammad Al-Sheikh Hassan was born in the city of Tulkarm in the West Bank on September 17 , 1945.  He received his primary, preparatory and secondary education in the schools of his city , Tulkarm .  He obtained his high school diploma from the city’s prestigious Al-Fadhiliya School . 

Khaled Hassan al-Sheikh was one of the first to devote himself to Palestinian struggle work.  He left for Pakistan in 1965 to study for a bachelor’s degree in geology at a Pakistani university, and there he joined the Fatah movement organization. He was the founder of the Fatah movement’s region in Pakistan , and in 1969 he became the movement’s representative and secretary there. 

He then worked in the Fatah Foreign Relations Office in Lebanon in 1970 , then was appointed ambassador of the Palestine Liberation Organization to Uganda in 1973 , where the Palestinian embassy there was one of the first and most important Palestinian embassies, and he worked to strengthen Palestinian-Ugandan relations, and was widely accepted in Ugandan circles, and Ugandan President Idi Amin consulted him on many political matters, as they had a strong friendship. 

He was appointed as the Palestinian ambassador to Romania in 1980 and continued until 1983 , then moved to work as an ambassador to India from 1983 until 2004 , and finally as an ambassador to Yemen from 2004 until 2007. 

The Sheikh holds a PhD in “Petroleum Economics” from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest ,  is the “Dean of Palestinian Ambassadors,”  a leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization ,  a member of the Palestinian National Council ,  and was also a governor in the Palestinian Ministry of Interior by virtue of a decision issued by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on July 17 , 1995, following the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority . 

His writings

Dr. Khaled Hassan Al-Sheikh wrote a number of books, including a comprehensive book in English about the history of the Palestinian cause . This book was adopted as a reference for the Palestinian novel in India . 

His death

Dr. Khaled Al-Sheikh died on the evening of Monday, January 17 , 2011 , at the age of 65 years and four months, following a terminal illness .  He was buried in his city of Tulkarm in a large official and popular funeral that the city witnessed. 

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas offered his condolences on the death of the Sheikh, expressing his deep sorrow at the news of his death after “a life full of giving, national struggle, and dedication to serving his country, people, and just cause.”  Palestinian embassies and PLO representatives mourned Ambassador Sheikh.  The Fatah movement also mourned Ambassador Sheikh, and the movement said in a statement issued by it and its Central Committee : “ Abu Hassan was an example of a cultured leader who believed in the causes of his people, and was known for his commitment, sacrifice, and giving, and was a model of success in all the positions he held .”
