Rami Walid Kamel Hamdallah (born August 10, 1958 in Anabta) is a Palestinian academic and politician . He has been the head of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission since April 1, 2024. He previously served as Prime Minister of Palestine for six years; on June 3, 2013, he was tasked with forming a new Palestinian government to succeed Salam Fayyad , and on May 29, 2014, he was tasked with forming the Palestinian National Consensus Government . He continued to serve as Prime Minister until his resignation on January 29, 2019. 

Early life and education

Hamdallah was born on August 10, 1958 in the town of Anabta in the Tulkarm District . He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Britain .  Hamdallah graduated from the University of Jordan in 1980 and obtained a master's degree from the University of Manchester in 1982. He then obtained a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University in Britain in 1988.

Practical life

Hamdallah worked as a professor at An-Najah National University , where he taught English before becoming the university's president in 1998. He has served as Secretary-General of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission since 2002.  He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestine Securities Exchange for three terms, the first from December 2003 to January 2006, the second from October 2008 to June 2013, and the last from May 2022 to August 2022. 

Prime Minister

His resignation from the 2013 government
Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah submitted his resignation on Thursday, June 20 , 2013 , less than two weeks after the new Palestinian government was sworn in before the Palestinian president. Hamdallah explained that the reason for his resignation was the encroachment on his powers by members of the government.  He was reassigned to form the government again on September 19 , 2013. 

Government of National Accord

On May 23, 2014, delegations from Fatah and Hamas met in the Beach Camp, which later became known as the Beach Agreement, as part of several attempts to achieve reconciliation and end the division after the Palestinian division in 2007  . Among the points of agreement was the formation of a national government, which Hamdallah officially assigned on May 29  and its formation was officially announced on June 2, 2014, and it included 17 ministers 

Attempted assassination

On Tuesday morning, 13-3-2018, Rami Hamdallah headed to Gaza to inaugurate a water purification plant project there. Upon his arrival in Gaza, unknown individuals blew up his convoy with a large explosive device that was planted on the road, resulting in several injuries among the guards and security personnel, while Hamdallah escaped assassination. 

Despite the bombing, Hamdallah continued his visit and opened the purification plant in northern Gaza, then returned to his home in Tulkarm , where hundreds of Tulkarm residents welcomed him to celebrate his safe return and condemn what had happened.
