Information

Samir Al-Shihabi is a Saudi ambassador and diplomat of Palestinian origins. He worked as an ambassador for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to several countries and to the United Nations.

The beginning of his life and education

 

Samir was born in Jerusalem on May 27, 1925. He studied at the American University in Cairo. And also in the Law Department of Yale University in the United States, and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

 

His working life

 

Al-Shihabi joined the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1949. He served as its first ambassador to Switzerland from 1956 to 1959. He then served as its acting ambassador to Rome from 1959 to 1961. He served as its ambassador to Turkey, Somalia, and Pakistan, before becoming its permanent representative to the United Nations in 1983 .

In 1991, he was elected as President of the forty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly. His last position before his retirement was the Kingdom’s ambassador to Switzerland, he retired in 1999.

His personal life: Samir married Norwegian-born Widad Kari Stonejem. They met during his studies at Cambridge University, then they settled in the Kingdom. They have two sons, one of whom is Ali Al-Shehabi, a banker.

His death

 

Al-Shihabi died on his farm in Portugal on August 25, 2010.
