Muhammad Hassan Abd al-Rahman Melhem, nicknamed Abu Ala' (born September 4, 1929 in Halhul - died July 17, 2021 in Amman) was a Palestinian politician, former mayor of Halhul, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the Palestinian National Council.

Growing up and educational attainment
Muhammad Hasan Melhem was born in the city of Halhul, north of Hebron Governorate, on September 4, 1929. He received his primary and preparatory education between Halhul and Hebron schools, and obtained his certificate from the Rashidiyyah School in Jerusalem. He obtained a BA in English Literature from the Lebanese University in 1970.

He participated in the West Bank local elections in 1976 and was elected mayor of Halhul, where he continued in the position until the 2005 Palestinian local elections.

In 1980, the Israeli authorities deported him to southern Lebanon following the Al-Dabouya operation in Hebron, and he was allowed to return after 16 years.

On November 29, 1984, Melhem became a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, during a session of the Palestinian National Council in Amman, and continued until September 28, 1991.

He served as an advisor to Yasser Arafat and played several roles in the Palestinian Ministry of Education and the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Muhammad Melhem died in Amman, Jordan, on July 17, 2021 AD, corresponding to Dhu al-Hijjah 7, 1442 AH, at the age of 91.
