Medhat Abbas is a Palestinian health official who has served as Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza since around January 2023 , including during the 2023 Palestinian-Israeli War .
Working life
Since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, Abbas has been an official in the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza, and as director of the ministry's crisis unit, Abbas told the British Medical Journal that Hamas fired medical officials because of “administrative, financial and moral corruption,” not politics.
Abbas headed the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Health in Gaza during the 2008-2009 Gaza War. Abbas later served as director-general of Al-Shifa Hospital , the main hospital in Gaza, during the 2012 Israeli war on Gaza and Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah during the 2014 Gaza war .
Abbas accused Israel of obstructing the entry of a number of X-ray machines needed to treat patients in the besieged Gaza Strip , during the 2023 Palestinian-Israeli war.
