Born in 1923 in Gaza, Berbari is a pioneering Palestinian woman who began her professional life as an educator and became a leader in social, political and educational activities in the Gaza Strip at a time when women were largely denied access to public affairs. Berbari speaks 3 languages and received her BA in 1949 from Cairo University in Social Science, making her Gaza’s first female university graduate.
Berbari then went on to join the education sector and became the principal of the only girls’ preparatory school in Gaza. She worked to introduce a female teacher’s training program, which developed into the female teacher’s institute in Gaza. At the same time as acting as the institute’s principle, she was also the principal of the women’s branch of Gaza’s open public university and later became a social science inspector for girls’ schools in the Gaza Strip.
